Have members of your church or neighborhood friends to donate items around their homes, things they are not using. Instead of having a huge yard sale. Auction the items off. Have the ladies make pies and cakes to auction off. These yummy desserts bring in a lot of dough.
You can also buy something nice, that could be worth $50-$100 and have everyone buy a ticket for one dollar. The more tickets they buy, the more chances they have of winning this item.
This really brings in a load of money.
