ACTS After Church To Somewhere

At least once per month, if not more often, go somewhere after your latest Sunday church service. Vary the location among restaurants, outdoor activities, home fellowships, etc. Encourage youth to bring their friends to the service beforehand.

Adopt A Highway

Many highways invite groups to adopt a stretch of road and come out to pick up litter. Make this a quarterly event at least. Give prizes away to those who collect the most trash. Recycle what you can.

Adopt-A-Phonebooth

Have the youth search out and “adopt” a full phone booth (one that is enclosed). Have them stock it with gospel tracts and maintain it by keeping trash cleared out of it. Have surprise inspections and reward the youth who have the cleanest and best stocked booth. This is a good introductory form of evangelism.

Adoration

Adoration is an activity that basically teaches kids that worshiping is not always just singing. You have, perhaps a small group of kids. All you need is a chalkboard or a white board and one writing utensil. Play quiet music for approx. 15min. and pass the pen to one person. That person can then approach the board and write one or two words that he/she is thankful for (forgiveness). Then the student passes the pen to anyone in the room, and so on until each person has finished their own public adoration. After each student has finished allow the group as a whole to reflect upon what has been written. This way you can give your praises to God by meditating and thanking Him for what He has done.

Affirm Me

I still have the sheet in my warm fuzzy file. All it says on the top is AFFIRM ME. It sounds like a pretty blunt cry for affection, but it came from an activity run on a retreat with Bible College students years ago.

This is much like the affirmation activity where students write affirming statements on each others backs but in this instants students are to list the Fruit of the Spirit that they see exhibited in the lives of that student. You can either put the sheets up with the students name on a wall during a retreat and at any time the students can go by and indicate the fruit they see exhibited. It is always more fun to tape it to each others backs. As the leader you should join in as well and some time when you feel like throwing in the towell put out your affirmation sheet and you may want to wait a few more weeks.

Air Jell-O

You’ll need a flexible clear plastic tube at least a metre long, some liquidy Jell-O and a ground covering. Put the Jell-O inside the tube and have two youth stand at each end of the tube. The idea is for each to blow into the tube as hard as they can for as long as they can. The person who gives up or has weaker lungs will inevitably get Jell-O on their face. An excellent, high excitement game. You could even have playoffs and award chocolates or lollies for winners.

Airing Out Dirty Laundry

Tools needed: Rope, clothes line/rope, clothes pins, dirty laundry (old soiled clothes), paper, and magic marker, Bible.

Purpose: To encourage teens to share their burdens through prayer and Godly counsel, not on social network sites or through texting.

Before your class arrives hang a rope across the classroom and hang your dirty clothes up. Make signs which state gossip, rumors, personal information, personal failures, family problems and personal relationship problems. Leave some blank paper for you to solicit responses from your students.

When your class arrives someone in the group will more than likely ask what is going on with the clothes hanging up. Explain to the class that you brought your dirty laundry in so they could see it. More than likely that will get a negative response from the class and you can tell them you thought that they would want to see you’re your dirty laundry.

There are a lot of young people who do not know the term “Airing out your/my dirty laundry out”. Explain to the students what the term means, or used to mean, it’s unacceptable to talk in the community about ones personal affairs. It used to be unacceptable to share information about someone else’s personal affairs. Ask those ways people are airing out their “dirty laundry”. Ask your students if media is being used to air out dirty laundry. Explain to the class how the internet, Facebook, and other social media sites are being used to air out dirty laundry. Just as we would not hang our dirty clothes out in front of our houses for all to see, especially under garments, we should not hang out our personal information for all to see through texting and other electronic means.

Most states have laws now concerning cyber-bullying which can be interpreted by others as being when we put out negative information about others using electronic means (refer to your local state laws).

On each piece of clothing attach the words and the responses from the class. Explain each word and how it can cause damage to the person their talking about and to their own personal testimony. Explain that the internet is a powerful tool but is and can be used for the wrong purpose.

With my class I used Gal. 6:2 “Bear ye one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ”. You can also use James 5:16 “Confess your faults one to another”. It should be noted that this should be done with fellow Christians or to Godly counsel, not on a social network site. The purpose of this sharing is so Christian’s can pray for you, and when they share with you, tell it to God and not others. There are many scriptures that address rumors, gossip, ect…. encourage your teens to bring topics to you that burden them so you can show them through the Bible how to resolve or get the answer to their problems/burdens.

NOTE: Today’s teens are faced with many challenges. Explain to your teens that if they receive information about someone hurting themselves or others it is their responsibility to tell a trusted adult who will help resolve the problem. Create an atmosphere in your classroom that your students will share with you but let them know you are obligated to share harmful information also.

Airplane Blitz

Bring a stack of copier paper and let the kids make lots and lots of paper airplanes. Then you need some way to clearly divide the room in half. (The taller the divider the better.) A couch works, but even better was a rolling chalk board. Put half the kids on each side of the divider. Put half the paper airplanes on each side of the divider. Explain that they can only throw ONE plane at a time and they must stop when the leader says “stop”. Say “Go”. They throw the airplanes over the divider as fast as they can. Planes are flying in both directions. Let them go about 3 minutes. Give them a ten second warning and then say “stop”. Count the airplanes on each side of the divider. The team with the least number of planes wins. Repeat it a number of times, keeping track of the wins to get the champions.
A quicker variation: Throw a big bag of loose socks.

Airplane Game

First explain the rules…
-You are all on a plane that has crashed
-You want to get the entire group to the base, or you will ALL blow up!

Now you put cones out to make a small base, and then make the kids stand in a line and put their arms out. They then fly a bit pretending to be an airplane. One of the leaders yells out Crash, and they sprawl on the ground. Then all the leaders go around and whisper an injury to each kid. Then once they all have injuries, you give them 6 min. to get the whole team, to the base, but since some of the youths have no legs, some no sight, and some are unconcious, they will have to work together to get the whole team to the base! You can make up lots of diffrent injuries, and even have some of them be livestock, or dilusional, and trying to break the people down by telling them that they are at the wrong base!

This is a great opportunity to talk to youth about the importance of working together, and let them know how important it is to be helpers to Christians with “heart/faith injuries!”
